Thanks in part to the Internet, new discoveries from research laboratories and universities allow parents greater access and knowledge about a child’s cognitive development. This piece takes a closer look at how parents can improve their child’s brain development.
Raise your child in a loving and nurturing environment
Studies have shown that infants, toddlers and preschoolers all thrive when raised in loving and nurturing environments. This includes parents who provide plenty of meaningful physical contact by cuddling with their child, having fun during bath-time, and also infant massages. Also speaking aloud to a baby or young child slowly, in conjunction with eye contact, and drawing out your syllables when speaking, is beneficial to developing young minds.
Make sure that discipline remains positive
Discipline, when implemented properly, should teach a young child right from wrong with a positive message, versus a complete lack of discipline or overly-forceful and unreasonable tactics, which can confuse and frighten a child. Use a serious tone of voice, not necessarily loud, when correcting mistakes to emphasize your displeasure as the parent. Rules should be reasonable according to the developmental stage of the child. For example, it’s expected for young children to run and bounce, so it is suggested to provide the proper environment for this behavior, such as a park or playground. Also, childproofing your home will eliminate many potential problems as a parent. The valuable trinkets collected over the years should be stored in a safe place.
Give your child appropriate responses to certain actions
Children are eager to learn about the world around them by asking many questions and experimenting with cause and effect. So, it’s important for a parent’s response to inquiries, and consequences to experimenting to be well thought out before implementing any action. Provide your child with appropriate and consistent correction to behaviors. Also, be sure to provide answers to his or her many questions concerning the ever-expanding world as this will enhance brain development.

Much of what a young child is exposed to in life will lead to brain development in some way. Parents therefore have an immensely important role to play in the development of their child’s brain. The childcare experts at Kids ‘R’ Kids take a closer look at how your parenting skills may be affecting your child’s brain development.
Fill your child’s life with positive experiences
Creating positive experiences for your child encourages healthy brain development. These positive experiences can be anything from reading a book or playing together, to heading out for an educational trip to the zoo. Numerous childcare studies have shown that physical and emotional trauma can negatively impact the brain development of a child.
Encourage learning wherever you go
Learning can be fun, so take advantage of opportunities to encourage learning through enjoyable activates. If you are in a store, encourage your child to count how many people are wearing green shirts during your trip, or ask about the sound certain animals make while at the park or the petting zoo. Your child’s brain is forming new synapses at an incredible rate, which means you should take advantage of every learning opportunity.
Do not stress or fight with your partner in front of your child
Your worries, whether financial, emotional or about relationships should not be displayed or spoken of in front of your child. Several studies have shown that maternal stress can have a debilitating impact on your child.

Tablet games and how to use them as educational tools for your child

Looking toward your child’s future and the impact of technology
Opinions are mixed about technology usage in early childhood education. Many people have seen young children or young adults become overly dependent on smartphones and tablets. As child care providers, Kids ‘R’ Kids suggests that parents monitor the use of and establish daily limits for the amount of time young children spend with technology. Unlike other day care providers, we emphasize a balance of education, technology and play time, allowing kids to be kids. A child who is happy and has ample playtime will enjoy learning just as much as having fun.

Infant development is generally measured in terms of milestones and, although every child develops at a different pace, these milestones can help prepare you for his or her changing developmental needs:
Milestones for months 0-3:
In these months, your child will become strong enough to lift and turn his or her head as well as stretch out their arms and legs. Your child’s motor control, while clumsy, will start to develop as he or she begins to open his or her hands and make gestures. Your child will also begin to smile, make their first sounds, and enjoy eye contact with you.
Milestones for months 4-6:
During this time, your child develops depth perception and is also able to see more clearly objects that are more than 12 inches away. Your child will start to track objects as they move and reach with both hands towards people and objects. Your infant will learn to sit with support and make plenty of pre-verbal babbling, cooing and squeaking sounds.
Milestones for months 7-10:
Your child will develop stronger motor skills and learn how to stand with assistance while bearing their own weight. Your child will enjoy bouncing while standing and holding onto you or holding onto furniture. Other motor abilities include holding objects with a single hand, banging on surfaces and using a grip to pick up objects. Your child will also start to respond to their name as well as understand emotions and the word no. By ten months, your child will be crawling and exploring. He or she may also say his or her first word.
Milestones for months 11-12:
Your child will be able to stand and move independently and will navigate between pieces of furniture that offer support. Your child will be able to manipulate objects more easily and express emotions more clearly, especially happiness and frustration. He or she will also show independence and affection. By 12 months, your child probably will take his or her first steps and will enjoy repeating words.
Much of infant development is driven through play and age-appropriate toys that can help your child to refine these skills. Stores like the Lollipop Toy Store offer a wide selection of toys to that your child will love.
